Yachts For Sale In Somerset

Somerset in Bristol County in southeastern Massachusetts is directly across the Taunton River from Fall River, MA. This quiet suburban community is 20 miles southeast of Providence, Rhode Island and 44 miles south of Boston (about an hour’s drive). The town is located on the western shore of the Taunton River and Mount Hope Bay. Somerset was incorporated in 1790 and first settled in 1677 on Shawomet lands. Because of its location on the Taunton with easy access to Narragansett Bay, Somerset was an important shipping point and after the War of 1812, it was one of America’s chief distribution points. In 1872, it became a major coal port and in the early 20th century, a large cannery was in operation. When neighboring Fall River’s textile mill industry grew in the 19th century, it overshadowed Somerset, which became a suburb to the city of Fall River.

Power generation became Somerset’s major industry in the 20th century. Founded in 1923, the Montaup Electric Co. was located upriver on the Taunton, and The Brayton Point Power Station founded in 1963 was located at the town’s southern tip. Fueled by coal, the Brayton Point plant drew heavy criticism for pollution and finally closed in 2017. The Montaup facility is now also closed, but electricity is still a big part of Somerset as it became a power hub of the national grid. Closely related Somerset and Fall River were connected by ferries and bridges that have long aged out of their usefulness and have been replaced.

The Brightman Street Bridge built in 1908 to replace the outdated dismantled Slade’s Ferry Bridge, in turn has been replaced by the new Veterans Memorial Bridge. Unfortunately, the old Brightman Street Bridge has been used as a political pawn by local people that did not want a proposed Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) terminal built upriver and by keeping the low drawbridge, would prevent tankers from coming upriver. The drawbridge has since been welded in open position (for safety) and is rusting away, but cost of demolition is prohibitive. There was some discussion of turning each half into fishing piers.

Bordon Flats Lighthouse built in 1881, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. The Bordon Flats Light is known as a “sparkplug lighthouse,” because the tower on caisson type of build resembles a sparkplug. The lighthouse is located on the Taunton River (Fall River, MA).

Somerset is within easy distance of the Providence-Warwick metro area at the head of the Narragansett Bay. Cruising boaters have a few good options for transient slips while enjoying the area. Somerset Marina & Yacht Sales is a family-owned full-service marina. Battleship Cove has moorings that are available for a daily fee through the Fall River Harbormaster.

Bristol Marine was established in 1998 by Andy Tyska, naval architect. Bristol Marine is conveniently located at 1 Main Street in Somerset. The yard is adjacent to Pierce Park on the Taunton River and across from Fall River Country Club. The marina features state-of-the-art 26,000 sq ft service facilities. Pass under Braga Bridge and Veteran’s Memorial Highway Bridge to the marina inside the protected Taunton River off Mount Hope Bay. Both bridges have 60 ft clearance at high tide closed bridge. Seasonal and transient moorings and slips for vessels up to 100 ft are available. The yard offers comprehensive marine services. Bristol Marine is a short ride from Newport, RI and Bristol, RI.
