Several hiking trails traverse through wetlands and near ponds giving visitors a chance to see wildlife, especially birds (some rare species) and ducks, and American eels that are common to the wetlands areas. The Sanctuary is managed by Mass Audubon. Originally named Cotacheset for the local Native American people, the name was changed as the area became an oyster harvesting center, to Oysterville and then to Osterville, thanks to a map’s misspelling.
This quaint, exclusive seaside community on Nantucket Sound features elegant 19th century homes that line the main streets. The village center’s Main Street and Wianno Avenue charm visitors with art galleries, boutiques, ice cream parlors and other shops. There are two private country clubs in Osterville—The Wianno Club and Oyster Harbors Club. Each features 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, and a private beach. Wianno Yacht Club is a private club on West Bay. Osterville’s many inlets and protected harbors are great for fishing and boating. Osterville is conveniently located near Hyannis with its transportation, shopping malls, restaurants and ferries to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. A steel drawbridge connects the village to Little Island and Grand Island/Oyster Harbors, a gated community of luxury homes and private country club.
Osterville’s Historical Museum was established in 1931 for the purpose of preserving the village’s history. The museum features the largest collection of wooden boats in Massachusetts and is home to Crosby Boats. The Herbert F Crosby Boat Shop, circa 1855, is on the campus of the Museum. The Crosby Catboat originated in the mid 1800s and quickly became a favorite of sailors. From 1850 to 1970 the Crosby family built over 3000 catboats; they are America’s oldest, currently active, wooden boat building family. The shop was moved to the museum location from the shore of the bay where Nauticus Marina was built. The shop contains some of the original tools from the 19th century boat shop. Four adjoining shops display the museum’s collection of full-size wooden boats including some designed by Oliver Hinckley. The largest shop displays a Wianno Senior (favored by JFK), and a Wianno Junior, two one-design local racing classes designed and built by Crosby.
The Museum campus includes The Cammett House (1720), the oldest house in Osterville. The house was extended in 1830s and named for John Cammett, the earliest known inhabitant. The Captain Jonathan Parker House was owned by a 1820s coastal schooner captain who made his trade fishing and providing transportation along the seacoast. The original half Cape house built in 1824 had many additions to it over the years. The house became the Osterville Historical Museum in 1961. The Osterville Garden Club maintains the entrance. From mid-June to mid-September, the museum hosts Osterville Farmers Market on Fridays. Another Osterville Historical Museum attraction is Jelly House. These tiny, dollhouse-like houses were built alike in the early 1900s to sell jelly along roadsides, through a franchise called Cape Cod Jellies, started by Theodore Clifton of West Barnstable. After WWII, the business dwindled and the Jelly Houses fell to disuse or they were moved to private gardens and used as children’s playhouses.
Armstrong-Kelley Park is 8.5 acres of well-planned gardens and walkways maintained by the Cape Cod Horticulture Society. It is the oldest and largest privately owned park on Cape Cod. Free to the public, the park is a great place for a walk.
Nauticus Marina Inc is a private marina that offers 1600’ of seasonal dockage in a beautiful setting of the Marina and Lighthouse—a popular wedding venue. Docks are lit and include shore power and freshwater. Amenities include access to the Lighthouse, lounge area, and bathhouse. Lockers are available. Located in the protected Osterville Boat Basin on the North Bay. Nauticus Marina is a short walk to Osterville Center.
Crosby Yacht Yard marina offers a full range of boat and marine services and a fuel dock. Transient dockage, if available can accommodate vessels up to 50-ft. Dockage must be reserved.
The family-owned Crosby Boat Yard has a history of custom boat building that spans more than 200 years. Brothers Daniel Crosby and Jesse Crosby Jr. began building boats in 1798 when Osterville was a tiny fishing and farming village. But it wasn’t until 1850 when brothers Horace Crosby and Worthington Crosby built “Little Eva” the first Crosby Catboat, that the Crosby name gained recognition.
Built from backyard timbers, the sturdily built inshore fishing boat featured elegant lines that made the boat attractive as well as seaworthy. Over the years, family members contributed their talents and skills, and generations built on the early foundations, furthering the Crosby boatbuilding tradition. In 1914 Horace Manley Crosby designed the Wianno Senior, a gaff-rigged centerboard sloop, perfect for sailing the local waters and a racing boat for yachtsmen of Wianno Yacht Club. Commissions for the boat followed. When John Fitzgerald Kennedy (JFK) became President in early 1960s, he and family spent time sailing aboard Victura, their Wianno Senior that was built, stored and maintained at the Crosby Boat Yard. Still at the same Osterville location, Crosby Yacht Yard continues its commitment to its quality yachting heritage.
