British immigrants to Coconut Grove, Isabella and Charles Peacock, built the first hotel in South Florida mainland in 1882 on the site of present-day Peacock Park.

In the 1960s, Coconut Grove was the center of South Florida’s “hippie” counter-culture movement, hosting “love-ins” and concerts, including the infamous Jim Morrison/Doors concert at Dinner Key Auditorium. The free-spirited, bohemian community continued to grow in Coconut Grove through the 1970s. The renowned Coconut Grove Arts Festival got its start in 1963 by theater aficionado Charlie Cinnamon, as an outdoor Parisian-style “clothesline” exhibition to publicize a Coconut Grove Playhouse production. Since then, the Coconut Grove Arts Festival has become one of the largest and top-rated Arts Festivals in America, attracting about 120,000 people to Coconut Grove’s Biscayne Bay waterfront streets over the Presidents’ Day Weekend. This 3-day event features the works of over 360 artists in various mediums and styles, live performances, local culinary treats and more. As a non-profit organization, proceeds from the event help fund year-round arts programs and scholarships to students attending fine arts programs in local schools.

Inspired by ancient European mansions, much of the original house is intact and spans 38,000 ft. Many architectural details were imported from France and Tuscany and are featured in the Museum, along with a collection of art from the 15th to 19th centuries and an assortment of vintage furniture. The 10 acres of Gardens are a major attraction; the Formal Gardens, were designed by landscape architect, Diego Suares and are reminiscent of France’s Versailles. The swimming pool and grotto features a rare mural by American painter Robert Winthrop Chanler. After Deering’s passing in 1925, the family sold or donated much of the property to the County, and it was renamed Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Vizcaya was used to shoot scenes of major films, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Bad Boyz II, and Iron Man 3. Vizcaya continues to be a highly popular location for photo shoots, weddings, quinceañera, and other events.

Barnacle Historic State Park is a 5-acre park in Coconut Grove featuring the home of Ralph Middleton Munroe, an influential founder of Coconut Grove. The house, built in 1891, is the oldest house in its original location and offers a view of frontier life during the “Era of the Bay” when all travel to and from Miami was by sea. At that time, boats were the primary mode of transportation and Ralph Munroe was a leading designer of sailing yachts. Replicas of his sailboats, Egret, a 28 ft sharpie ketch designed in 1886 and Flying Proa, designed in 1898, can be seen in the Bay. Ralph Munroe was the original Commodore of Biscayne Bay Yacht Club, which he co-founded. Munroe preserved the natural tropical hardwood hammock of his property, cutting only a narrow buggy path, making it one of the few remaining of the once vast Miami Hammock. The house was used a backdrop for the Miami Vice TV series final episode, ‘Deliver Us from Evil,’ that aired in 1988. Concerts and other events are held at Barnacle Historic State Park throughout the year.

Another historic park is Peacock Park on 9 acres with an open view of Biscayne Bay. Originally the site of Coconut Grove’s first hotel, Bay View Inn, built in 1883, and renamed Peacock Inn by owners, Charles and Isabella Peacock who immigrated from England. Peacock Park hosts musical performances on its grounds during the Coconut Grove Arts Festival held annually in February. It offers many family-friendly recreational activities: basketball, softball, soccer, playground, and indoor recreational facility.
The Kampong is a 9-acre tropical garden located on Biscayne Bay in Coconut Grove and is part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden. “Kampong” is Javanese for village or cluster of houses; The Kampong is the former estate of Dr David Fairchild, famed Botanical explorer who traveled throughout southeast Asia and other tropical places to collect exotic plants. The Kampong features exotic tropical fruit and 50 varieties of mango, numerous species of palm, cycads, and flowering trees. The comprehensive collection is studied by scientists and university and college students.

The Goombay Festival is typically held annually the first weekend in June at Elizabeth Virrick Park, and celebrates the Bahamian legacy of Coconut Grove, honoring the contributions of early Bahamian immigrants. A Junkanoo Goombay Parade starts near McDonald Street, continues down Grand Avenue, then to the Festival at Elizabeth Virrick Park. The Festival features a Junkanoo Band, colorfully costumed Junkanoo dancers, stilt walkers, Royal Bahamian Police Band, and great Bahamian food favorites like conch fritters and ceviche. The 582-slip marina, accommodating yachts up to 110 ft, is Florida’s largest wet slip facility in a park-like setting and is available to transient, long-term and liveaboard customers. 225 moorings for vessels up to 40 ft LOA are also available. The marina features 30/50/100amp service, laundry facilities, pump-out, US Customs clearing, 24-hr staff/security, protected slips to 7-ft draft, and concrete docks with wooden finger piers. Dinner Key Marina is attached to the popular Monty’s Raw Bar and Miami’s City Hall, formerly the Pan Am terminal building. The marina suffered major damage from Hurricane Irma impacting over 50% of the dockage. A multimillion-dollar construction project is underway to restore Dinner Key Marina to full operating capacity; the City of Miami expects completion of the 3-phase project in mid-2021.

Biscayne Bay Yacht Club, a private yacht club, was founded in 1887 by commodore Ralph Middleton Munroe, renowned sailing yacht designer. It is one of the oldest yacht clubs in southeast US. The club holds regattas and focuses on sailing and social events.

The Coral Reef Yacht Club was established in 1955 as Royal Palm Yacht Club at the former waterfront estate of George Engle on Bayshore Drive in Coconut Grove. The Club hosts the Bacardi Cup Regatta—the largest Star Regatta held in North America in 1978, that continues annually with 30 countries represented currently and 100 boats. Coral Reef Yacht Club, a private yacht club, features regattas and summer sailing camps. Visiting yachtsmen are welcome to CRYC as a stopover destination by advance reservation with the Dockmaster. Currently CRYC has 104 wet slips for vessels with maximum length 65 ft and 7 ft draft. Mobile fuel can be arranged via prescheduled truck.
