The history of Lighthouse Point is interwoven with the history of Caps Place Restaurant, and its colorful founder, Captain Eugene Theodore Knight who was one of the earliest settlers of Lighthouse Point. Caps Place was established in 1928 during the Prohibition years, after the Sept. 1926 hurricane devastated South Florida essentially ending the Roaring Twenties real estate boom. Originally built on a converted barge and called Club Unique, Caps became a popular supper club and gambling casino in the 1930s and 1940s. Capt. Theodore Knight was born in 1871 in Cape Canaveral to a seafaring and lighthouse-keeping family line; he ran away from home at 13 and went to sea, working his way from messboy on a lighthouse tender to Master of Morgan Line Steamers, which sailed from New Orleans to New York. His younger brother, Thomas, became a lighthouse keeper at Canaveral Lighthouse, like his father and grandfather, and later transferred to Hillsboro Lighthouse at the Hillsboro Inlet near Lighthouse Point.
Cap and his second wife, Lola, become rumrunners, bringing in bottles of whiskey in burlap sacks from Bimini, Bahamas. A skilled navigator, Cap was never caught as he brought his contraband cargo to Hillsboro Inlet and then dropped the burlap sacks in Lake Placid, tied to buoys for nighttime retrieval. Some suggested that his brother Thomas, keeper of the Hillsboro Lighthouse, helped him by signaling when the coast was clear!
Many prominent political figures, including Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt and British P.M. Winston Churchill during a war meeting at the Hillsboro Beach estate of Secretary of State, Edward R. Stettinius, were rowed over to the island restaurant to dine on fresh seafood at Cap’s Place. Prominent artists, socialites, Hollywood celebrities, famed sports figures, renowned musicians (George Harrison of the Beatles), and countless others have been ferried over to dine and enjoy the bar at Cap’s Place. Today, the passenger launch departs from Lighthouse Point Marina for the short boat ride to Cap’s Place on the peninsula with Lake Placid on one side and the ICW on the other. Private property on the land side prevents unauthorized access to the restaurant, but the boat ride is part of the Cap’s Place experience! Theodore “Cap” Knight also owned a commercial fishing fleet and wholesale fish market. He also managed an Everglades fish camp in the 1940s. Cap died in 1964 at 93. The restaurant is currently owned and operated by the family of his dear friend and protégé, Al Hasis.
Also, of historical significance to Lighthouse Point is the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse, which was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1979 and is one of Broward County’s oldest structures. The lighthouse is on the north side of Hillsboro Inlet on USCG property, midway between Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton on the barrier island, Hillsboro Beach. The Light marks the northern point of an underwater coral formation known as the Florida Reef. It was constructed as an octagonal iron pyramid tower with a center column, watch house, second-order Fresnel lens, and was first lit in 1907. The inner column has a circular staircase to the viewing platform. The tower is painted white on the lower half and black on the upper half for contrast with background of trees or sky. Its lifetime keeper was Thomas Knight, younger brother of Cap Knight; the Light was automated in 1974.
The powerful, updated Light is visible for 35 miles at sea on a clear night and is the most powerful Light on the east coast of the US. The Hillsboro Lighthouse Preservation Society took over maintenance of the Lighthouse in 2008 and was responsible for restoring the Fresnel lens in in 1997 when the Society was founded. Built on the point of a peninsula, the Lighthouse/USCG property is surrounded on 3 sides by water and the private Hillsboro Club to west, restricting vehicle access to authorized persons only. Visitors arrive by passenger boat from nearby Sands Harbor Resort & Marina. Visitors can tour the Lighthouse and climb the 138-ft tower for an amazing panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean, Pompano Beach, Lighthouse Point, the ICW and Hillsboro Mile. The beach is a sea turtle nesting site. A family of nurse sharks hang around the jetty and patrol the shore; they can occasionally be seen from the tower viewing platform!
