History of St. Augustine, Florida

Although Ponce de Leon landed near St Augustine, searching for the legendary “Fountain of Youth” in 1513 and claimed the land for Spain, the city was founded years later in 1565, by Spanish admiral Pedro Menendez de Aviles, who also became Florida’s first governor. St. Augustine became the capital of Spanish Florida for over 200 years, until it went to the British in 1763. Florida was returned to Spain twenty years later and Spain ceded Florida to the United States in 1819. Toward the end of that century, Henry Flagler, American industrialist and co-founder of Standard Oil, built the Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) to facilitate travel to the series of luxury hotels he built in key destinations along the Florida east coast.

When his wife became ill, her physician advised a warm climate. Finding transportation and accommodations inadequate, and an opportunity, he set to develop the railway to St. Augustine and build the Ponce de Leon Hotel in the Spanish Renaissance architectural style which was completed in 1888. Today the Ponce de Leon Hotel is part of Flagler College. It is an amazingly beautiful building. He also built the Alcazar Hotel, which is now the Lightner Museum, loaded with artifacts from that “Gilded Age” era.
The Spanish origins are evident throughout old St Augustine, with its narrow brick paved streets and old-world style architecture; visitors feel like they are in a European city!

Many buildings are national landmarks, carefully preserved, along with its many legends, making the city a huge year-round tourist attraction. With 144-square blocks of restaurants, shops, museums, galleries, trolley and horse-drawn open carriage tours, ghost tours, the San Sebastian Winery, the Castillo de San Marcos Spanish fortress, Ripley’s “Believe It Or Not” and so much more, located on the Matanzas River on the east and the San Sebastian River on the west, one visit is not enough to explore and take it all in.

Besides the historic downtown area, the restored Bridge of Lions takes you across the Matanzas and AICW (Atlantic Intercoastal Waterway) to the barrier Anastasia Island and St. Augustine’s beautiful beaches and fishing pier. Visitors can climb the 219 steps to the St. Augustine Lighthouse observation deck, 140-ft above ground for a 360-degree panoramic view of the ocean, rivers and city. Nearby is the Alligator Farm zoological park and bird rookery. Established in 1893, it is one of America’s oldest attractions and exhibits all 24 recognized crocodilian species of the world.

For Cruisers on the Great Loop, St Augustine is a must-stop along the way. There are many marinas and boatyards able to accommodate transient boaters as well as long-term liveaboards. The St. Augustine Municipal Marina (City Marina) is primely located at the heart of downtown, just south of the Bridge of Lions on the Matanzas Riverbank. The new breakwater dock on the north side has 42 slips for beamier boats like catamarans and other multi-hulls. A large face dock with 2 berths can accommodate yachts greater than 200’ in length. Close in are the dinghy docks for ferrying to and from the nearby mooring fields—San Marcos Field to the north and Menendez Field to the south of the marina, and the Salt Run Mooring Field.

Camachee Cove Yacht Harbor and Marina is a private, full-service boatyard facility about 2 miles from the Historic District and less than 1 mile from the St. Augustine Inlet and Atlantic Ocean. It is a designated “Clean Marina” with 260 slips, able to accommodate vessels up to 135’. Transient and long-term dockage is available. Rivers Edge Marina is located on the San Sebastian River (Marker 29), off the AICW (MM 780), just west of downtown St. Augustine. The facility has 100 slips (5 for transients) and vessels up to 150’ maximum. The Oasis Boatyard and Marina, located off the AICW in St. Augustine, also features a full-service boatyard. It offers 45 slips for vessels 60’ maximum length, available for transient, monthly and annual leases. The Conch House Marina Resort features a 194-slip marina on the Salt Run Channel in St. Augustine, the Conch House restaurant with outdoor and indoor tables, and is a designated “Clean Marina” off the AICW.
