Mangrove-lined rivers, streams, marsh pools with clear shallow water just go on and on in wild scenic beauty. The Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is 110,000 acres of mangrove forest, uplands and sensitive estuary waters that encompasses 40% of Collier County Coastline from Gordon Pass in Naples to the western Everglades. It is managed by the Florida Dept. of Environmental Protection, NOAA and Florida International University. Educational kayak tours and much more are offered to students and the public. The Cocohatchee and Gordon Rivers in Naples are also wonderful to explore by kayak.
For boaters, Florida’s Paradise Coast offers so much to explore, experience and enjoy with its many uninhabited islands, sugar-sand beaches, loads of shells, gently lapping Gulf of Mexico warm waters, magnificent sunsets and rich history in the cities and towns that have developed over the years. Naples got its start in the late 1860s when it was settled by Roger Gordon and Joe Wiggins to provide camping facilities for travelers and others.
Gordon Pass and Wiggins Pass bear their names, as does the Gordon River, a major waterway in Naples. In the 1880s, wealthy tourists were attracted to the beauty of the area and warm climate and began settling in Crayton Cove area. In 1887 a 600’ pier was built for easier access and Naples (named for its likeness to Naples Bay, Italy) became a “playground” for the wealthy industrialists, such as Harvey Firestone and Thomas Edison and celebrities like Greta Garbo, Hedy Lamarr and Gary Cooper during America’s “Gilded Age” and Roaring Twenties. In the 1920s, the construction of the Seaboard Airline Railroad spurred growth of Naples’ fishing industry and the development of a large oyster, clam and fish processing facility consisting of several buildings with tin roofs.
Located on the Gordon River, these buildings were repurposed and redeveloped in the 1970s into the Tin City waterfront shopping and restaurant complex that has become a major attraction in Naples. Featuring an eclectic mix of specialty shops and two waterfront restaurants, Riverwalk Fish & Ale House and Pinchers Crab Shack, Tin City retains its “Old Florida,” historic charm while preserving a small, yet significant, stretch of the Gordon River and is accessible by boat.
The Docks on Fifth Marina Association, a non-profit organization, is a 60-slip marina located on Naples’ 5th Avenue within walking distance of Tin City. Slips are available for lease or purchase. Vessel size is restricted to 32’ LOA, 12’ beam, 7’ draft and 10.5’ high tide/12’ low tide bridge clearance. The Naples City Dock was completely rebuilt with 84-deep water slips able to accommodate boats 30-60’ and has fuel docks, facilities, plus mooring balls for 4-night maximum stays. Vessels on the mooring balls must not exceed 43’ LOA x 18.5’ beam x 5’ draft. Naples City Dock has 400’ frontage that can accommodate transient vessels of various lengths.
The Marina at Naples Bay Resort is the only waterfront hotel with a fully operational 97-slip marina with direct access to the Gulf of Mexico. The Marina is located on the Gordon River and offers transient, seasonal and annual slip rentals, along with kayak and paddleboard rentals for exploring the many local waterways. The Naples Boat Club features a 47-wet slip Marina located on the Gordon River in the historic district. The Marina has a full-service fuel dock and access to Gordon’s Pass to the Gulf and beaches. On site is the Wharf Tavern restaurant and the Naples Boat Club is within walking distance of other restaurants and shopping.
For Yacht Club Members with reciprocity, there is the elegant Naples Yacht Club Inc, Naples first and oldest (1947) private club, located near Crayton Cove and downtown Naples on Naples Bay. The Yacht Club has transient dockage available to private yacht club affiliate members only. Naples Sailing & Yacht Club is also a member-only private club.
Some additional marina and boatyard facilities are Port O Call Marina, Naples Boatyard and Koski’s Marine Repair.
