The Clinton Village Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. The Historic District is comprised of about 100 well-preserved buildings, mostly 18th century to pre-Civil War houses and a few former shops, trades’, artisans’, and merchants’ buildings that lined both sides of East Main Street (US-1) from east of the Indian River to the Old Post Road. These historic houses are densely grouped and are set close to the road forming a picturesque streetscape. Waterside Lane and Liberty Street also feature groupings of historic 18th-19th century architecture.

Several architectural styles are exhibited, from early Colonial and Federal style homes, some updated or redone in Gothic Revival style to the later 19th century houses exhibiting the Greek Revival style of that period. A few houses are from the later Victorian period and early 20th century. Clinton’s town center is in the Historic District and includes historic civic, school, and church buildings. The Historic District also includes Liberty Green, a remnant of the 17th century Common and the Victorian style Clinton Cemetery (Colonial burying ground). Liberty Green is a park-like triangle between Liberty and East Main Streets that features a Civil War Monument and War of 1812 cannon. Other monuments are located throughout the Historic District.

Connecticut is becoming a prominent wine-producing state and established the Connecticut Wine Trail & Passport Program to promote the many vineyards and wineries across the state. Participants in the Passport Program collect “stamps” from the wineries visited and are entered into drawings for various prizes. Check website for more details. The CT Wine Trail is one of Connecticut’s most well-known attractions. Chamard Wine & Wine Tasting in Clinton, CT is a much-awarded winery, including “Connecticut’s Best Wine” for 12 consecutive years. Clinton’s milder coastal climate and gentle hills are ideal for grape growing. Chamard Winery offers a tour of the grounds and wine tasting rooms to sample current wines and a French-inspired bistro offering a farm-to-table changing menu.

Chamard events include live music performances, a farmers’ market, and “famed” public wine dinners. Chamard was founded in 1983 by the William R Cheney family. The first vines were planted in 1984, a 5½ acre vineyard of mostly Chardonnay along with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. From 1986 to 1992 the remaining acreage was planted for a total of 20 acres. Winery was built in 1988 using fieldstones from the property, to produce the first 1988 Chardonnay. Chamard’s winemaking process combines traditional hands-on methods with modern equipment. Over the years, the vineyard acreage was expanded, and other varieties added. In 2005, Chamard was purchased by the Rothberg family who are committed to making the Chamard Vineyard a premier Connecticut destination.
