Old Saybrook was named for the prominent two of a group of nobles and gentlemen who had been granted a large land patent from the Earl of Warwick to lands extending west of the Narragansett River—Viscount Saye and Sele and Robert, Lord Brooke. For protection of the colonists, a fort was strategically positioned at the mouth of the Connecticut River. The settlement’s first church was organized in 1646 in the fort’s Great Hall. Many nearby towns (Lyme, Old Lyme, Westbrook, Chester, Essex, Deep River) developed from Saye-Brooke. Old Saybrook is on the site of the original colony.

Bordered by the Connecticut River on the east and Long Island Sound on southside, Old Saybrook with its seafaring history epitomizes the small-town coastal lifestyle. Old Saybrook is the commercial, retail, and small manufacturing center of the Lower Connecticut River Valley, with four major shopping centers and many shops, services, and other businesses along the Boston Post Road (US-1) and Main Street.

The Connecticut River, from the Canadian border with New Hampshire to the Long Island Sound, was declared in 1998, one of 14 American Heritage Rivers in the US. The mouth of the Connecticut River forms a mile-wide estuary that is protected by a large shallow sandbar that constantly shifts with currents and storms making deep-draft ship navigation hazardous. This has prevented major industries from developing along the lower Connecticut River’s banks. Under the supervision of Connecticut’s Dept of Environmental Protection, 1500 acres of wetlands have been restored.

The estuary and tidal wetlands from the River’s mouth to a point above Middletown was designated in 1994 as a “Wetland of International Importance”—one of only 15 designations in the entire US. The prior year the Nature Conservancy designated the tidelands, along with the North & South Cove wetlands, as one of the western hemisphere’s 40 biologically important ecosystems—“Last Great Places.” It is home to many species of waterbirds such as osprey, great blue herons, snowy egrets, piping plovers, and diamond-backed terrapins. River otters are often spotted in the wetlands and the bald eagle numbers are increasing. Two major wildlife areas are Plum Bank Marsh and Ragged Rock Creek Marsh.

The largest state-owned boat launch is under the Baldwin Bridge and there are many other places to launch kayaks, canoes, and motorboats. Kayaking is a popular sport and great way to explore the many coves and marshes for close-up views of wildlife. Fishing in the Long Island Sound and Connecticut River are popular recreational activities. Harvey’s Beach, Saybrook Point Mini-Golf, and Fort Saybrook Monument Park are among many other ways to enjoy the natural beauty of this amazing town, steeped in early American history. Fort Saybrook Monument Park is an 18-acre park open year-round and offers a panoramic view of the Connecticut River mouth. Elevated boardwalks traverse scenic marshlands. History of the Fort is told in storyboard style at the original Fort’s site. Fort Saybrook was constructed in 1636 by English military engineer, Lion Gardiner to defend English settlers from the warring Pequot tribe and Dutch. Gardiner later settled an island (Gardiner’s Island) off Long Island’s east end that is still owned by his descendants 11 generations later. The park was developed in 1981 and is in the National Register of Historic Places.
Saybrook Point Mini-Golf in Saybrook Point Park with the slogan, “Putt a Round by the Sound,” is open daily from Memorial Day to Columbus Day. The mini-golf course overlooks the Connecticut River and features a full concession serving hot dogs, ice-cream, candy, and drinks. Holes are themed on places in Old Saybrook such as Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse, Old Saybrook Fireboat, Town Hall, Fort Saybrook, the Schoohouse, and more. Very popular attraction.

Harvey’s Beach on the Long Island Sound is open year-round. There is a parking fee during the summer months, from Memorial Day to Labor Day. It is considered one of Connecticut’s best beaches and is a very popular attraction for swimming and sunning. The beautiful white sand beach is about 100 yards in length. Amenities include lifeguards, concession, parking, children’s playground, restrooms, and bathhouse.
Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, “The Kate” theater in Old Saybrook, opened in 2009 and is the only theater in the world named for Katharine Hepburn, 4-time Academy Award winning actress. Formerly the Old Saybrook Town Hall, built 1908 on Main Street, was the vision of Joseph Cove who met with a like-minded group to form the Old Saybrook Musical & Dramatic Club for presenting theatrical performances and for construction of the theater. It was used by the Ivoryton Players during WWII when it was difficult to access their own Playhouse. Incidentally, Kate Hepburn’s first theatrical performance was in 1931 at the Ivoryton Playhouse up the river in Ivoryton, CT. The Town Hall Theater never lived up to its performing arts potential and was repurposed. In 2003, the Old Saybrook Town offices moved out and the town voted to restore the building to its original theatrical use. It was renamed to Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in 2005.

The Katharine Hepburn estate located at 10 Mohegan Ave in the exclusive Fenwick area of Old Saybrook, is where she and her family summered for nearly a century. Her parents bought the property in 1913 and she had the brick house rebuilt after the 1938 hurricane destroyed the original. Though it was primarily a summer vacation retreat for the family, Katharine Hepburn (born in Hartford, CT) retired to her Fenwick home in 1997 until her death in 2003. The 8,400 sq ft home features 6 bedrooms, 7.5 baths, 7 gas fireplaces, gourmet kitchen with custom cabinetry, screened in blue stone porch, and was completely renovated in 2005. The property is set on 1.5 pristine acres and includes 220 ft of Long Island Sound frontage with a private dock and secluded beach, where Katharine enjoyed a daily swim. Howard Hughes would land his seaplane directly in front of the estate, back in the 1930s and 40s. The home also overlooks a private pond. Kate’s private paradise.

Saybrook Breakwater Light, aka Outer Lighthouse was lit in 1886 and is Old Saybrook’s iconic lighthouse. The “sparkplug” style cylindrical cast iron lighthouse, located on Fenwick Point at mouth of Connecticut River, was typical of lighthouses built between 1880s to 1920s. The lighthouse was supported by a cement-filled cast iron caisson sunk in 17 ft of water. The river was dredged in 1870s to accommodate increasing ship traffic and fishing vessels, and two granite breakwaters were built extending from river mouth on each side. In 1899 a fourth order 360-degree Fresnel lens replaced earlier lights. The Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse went from USCG (who automated it in 1959)/government ownership to private ownership in 2015, who also owned the former Katharine Hepburn estate, which he sold in 2019. The Saybrook Breakwater currently exhibits a green flashing light.

Lynde Point Lighthouse, aka Saybrook Inner Lighthouse, was built in 1838 and is north of the former Hepburn estate beach on the west side of the Connecticut River mouth. The original 1803 wooden structure which started to decay, was replaced in 1838 with a 65 ft octagonal brownstone tower, painted white. In 1847 a fourth-order Fresnel lens was installed, and a fog bell tower was added. Other upgrades were made. In 1890 a fifth-order Fresnel was installed which remains to this day. The US Coast Guard took over operation and fully automated the lighthouse in 1978, but it continues to be manned to prevent vandalism. It was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1990 and is an active navigation aid—not open to the public. Lynde Point Light was used in the 2005 horror movie, Predator Island.

The Old Saybrook Point Resort & Marina was developed from the Pease House (1871-1956), an upscale restaurant and hotel at Saybrook Point, operating 25 rooms along the rail line. During that era, Pease House was a regular among Old Saybrook residents like Barbara Maynard (who did much for the town when she was First Selectman), and other prominent guests. Pease House was replaced with a new resort and marina by a group of investors in 1957 and renamed, Terra Mar Hotel & Yacht Basin (1957-1980). Terra Mar was known for partying regulars, including the infamous Ratt Pack and other wealthy celebs arriving by yacht from the Long Island Hamptons. Louis and Mary Tagliatela bought the unoccupied and rundown Terra Mar at auction in 1980. Nine years later, the Tagliatelas replaced Terra Mar with Saybrook Point Resort & Marina (1980-present). Today the Saybrook Point Resort & Marina is operated by Louis and Mary’s sons and daughter. Additions include The Spa (2012) and award-winning waterfront restaurant, Fresh Salt, that opened to favorable reviews in 2011, and other upgrades and additions over the years of Tagliatela family ownership. The Saybrook Point Resort & Marina is a AAA Four Diamond rated resort.

Saybrook Point Marina (Saybrook Point Resort & Marina) has been selected for numerous awards including National Marina of the Year 2007 by Dockage Magazine, the 5 Bell award, and many more. Safe Harbor Ferry Point claims the best protected basin in the area and is conveniently located for cruises to New York and Rhode Island. Wet slips are available for vessels 15 ft to 65 ft LOA; max. 81 ft height, max. 17 ft beam, and max. 6 ft draft. Ragged Rock Marina in Old Saybrook is family owned and operated since 1973. Ragged Rock’s basin is an extremely well-protected, deep water basin surrounded by marshland and sea oats, that is a designated safe harbor. Two marina buildings flank the basin: east side bathhouses, and west side bathhouses with laundry facilities. Ragged Rock Marina is located just north of the railroad bascule bridge and entrance to the ½-mile channel leading to the basin is on the west bank of the Connecticut River. The marina has 243 slips on floating docks with water, 30amp power, Wifi, cable TV, and pump-out for a $5 service fee.

Dockside depth is 6 ft and max. vessel length overall is 55 ft. Amenities include BBQ grills and snacks available at onsite marine store. DIY boat work is allowed; yard mechanics are available, if needed. 25-ton marine travel lift for haul-outs. Facility is 24/7 surveilled with state-of-the-art video security system. Harbor One Marina is owned/operated by Paul Baron since 1971 and has been serving boaters since 1970s, and is affiliated with Portland Boat Works, Inc. located further north on the Connecticut River.

Home to Saybrook Point Yacht Club since 1988. Harbor One is in a great location immediately inside Old Saybrook breakwater and Bell 8 and is a premier yachting center and well-equipped marina with 86 slips for vessels from 20 to 150 ft.
