The 48 Convertible, originally introduced in 1985, was known for its speed and quickly became a very popular Viking model. The updated second generation 48 Convertible was produced from 2002 to 2009. This third generation of the ever popular 48 Convertible was launched in 2017 after a successful 6-7 year run of the 46 Convertible (2010-2016). The larger 124 sq ft cockpit of the new 48C allows space under aft deck for a Seakeeper gyrostabilizer that has become a popular option in recent years.

Following the accommodations floorplan of the 2-stateroom 46C, the 48 Convertible features a 3-stateroom layout with midships master and ensuite head taking up the entire starboard side. The two guest staterooms and guest/day head are on port side. Like the 46C, the companionway is shifted to port and is a change from the 48 Convertible of 2002-2009. Viking’s design team and engineers are constantly working to refine and improve each model in response to customers’ requirements and requests, new technologies, electronics, materials, and more. The tournament proven, proprietary Viking hull and systems, and distinctive sleek sportfish profile remain identifiably, Viking Yachts. The new 48C sports a black metallic windshield mask that blends in perfectly with the side windows in a graceful swash that emphasizes the fiercely elegant profile and sheerline.
Today’s 48 Convertible performs above and beyond its competition, with 30 knot cruising speed and top speed in mid 30s range powered by the standard twin MAN V8 900 CRM diesels. Owners can upgrade to 1000 hp or 1200 hp MAN engines if greater power is preferred. Fuel capacity is 1,100 gallons giving the 48C great range for distant fishing spots. And the luxurious interior and accommodations ensure the utmost comfort for longer passages.
With its own woodshop and skilled craftsmen, Viking’s joinery is superb in either hand-finished teak or walnut, for the warm, classic elegance owners have come to expect of a Viking yacht. And with nearly every component made in-house, Viking is able to achieve consistent quality and production efficiencies. It also gives Viking the flexibility for custom requests.
The 17-foot beam of the new 48 Convertible expands the interior space for a roomier layout. The salon is consistent with the convertible design—sliding door entry from cockpit steps, L-shaped couch with storage underneath and cocktail table on starboard side. Across from couch is the entertainment center in teak or walnut cabinetry and features the Bose surround sound home theater system and a 40” TV is mounted on forward bulkhead above dinette. Open U-shaped galley is on forward starboard side and features peninsula counter with a raised bar top at the end—a feature borrowed from Viking’s 80 to 92-foot Convertibles!
The galley has its own electrical panel for high-end appliances include Subzero undercounter refrigerator and freezer drawers, microwave/convection oven, and 3-burner electric cooktop. Stainless-steel sink with garbage disposal is undermounted in Cambria countertop. Galley has plenty of storage in satin or gloss finished matched grain cabinetry and drawers, and Cambria countertop space for prepping/serving food and beverages. Fluted valances, frameless window treatments, walnut accents in headliner, fine materials, furnishings, and other designer touches create a luxurious yet comfortable salon area for relaxing, entertaining, and dining.
A few steps down from salon is the accommodations level. The midships master suite fills the entire starboard side, with the ensuite master head starboard forward. The large master features an island queen berth, maple-lined hanging lockers, drawer and cabinet storage, 32” wall-mounted TV and entertainment system. Ensuite head features Amtico flooring, Cambria countertops, and large fiberglass shower stall. Two guest staterooms with generous over/under bunks take up the forepeak and portside along with the guest/day head that is aft of the staterooms. Laundry center with washer and dryer are portside at bottom of companionway steps. Central vacuum system connection for lower level is in companionway. Accommodations display the same quality and elegant style of the larger Viking Yachts.
The 48C’s open flybridge is a conventional convertible arrangement with centerline helm console set to aft and extended bridge deck for walk around space. Seating is forward of helm console and to either side with plenty of storage under seats. Visibility is excellent all around with clear sightlines to the cockpit. Viking helm features custom navigation electronics packages from subsidiary Atlantic Marine Electronics, under protective clear acrylic covers. Owners can opt for hardtop with built-in electric teaser reel compartment, Palm Beach towers, outriggers, rocket launcher rod holders and more for turn-key delivery.
Hatch in extended bridge aft deck and ladder leads down to mezzanine level of cockpit. The 124 sq ft cockpit which is 2 ft larger than its 46C predecessor, offers standard amenities and equipment for serious fishing—proven over decades of offshore tournaments! Large fish boxes flank an in-deck stowage box that can be plumbed as an extra livewell. Transom livewell lid doubles as cutting board when open and can also be used as a rigging station. Freezer is in observation mezzanine bench seat and a refrigerator is in lower mezzanine step. Drink box is in top salon step.
Portside is another insulated box and a 4-drawer tackle center. Also, standard is a set of flush rod holders, gated transom door with swim steps (swim platform is an option), under gunwale storage for equipment and shore power, water, cable TV & phone connections and oil change pump-out line. As always, Viking offers optional amenities and upgrades, such as a fighting chair (backing plate is built into cockpit sole), and owners can request their own preferences, making each 48 Convertible a semi-custom yacht.
The engine room is accessed by a lift-up hatch in the mezzanine bench seat. Bright white Awlgrip finished engine room benefits from the 17 ft beam with space to maintain and service the engines and surrounding equipment. There’s plenty of space to add an Eskimo ice machine, 700 GPD Sea Recovery watermaker and other optional equipment; space is provided in aft area near transom for a Seakeeper gyrostabilizer. The 48C is equipped with Viking’s centralized seawater system designed with a second in-line back-up pump to allow air-conditioning and other systems to operate during service, simplifying maintenance—no need to shut down entire system. The engine room is expertly engineered for optimal center of gravity, sound dampening, and convenience. MAN V8 diesel engines can be upgraded from 900 or 1000 hp to 1200 hp. Running bottom of modified-V hull deadrise transforms along the chine length from sharp 36-degrees forward to 11.8-degrees at the transom for enhanced performance and efficiency, and the excellent seaworthy dry ride Viking Yachts are known for.
Viking 48 Convertible length overall is 49’1” with a 17’ beam and 4’8” draft. Fuel capacity is 1,190 gals. and water is 178 gals. Gross weight is 66,342 lbs. with standard fuel load.
