Lake Sidney Lanier is an impoundment (reservoir) on the Chattahoochee River created when the Buford Dam was built in 1956. Lake Lanier covers 38,000 acres with sparkling waters, islands, beaches and wooded shoreline that is best explored by boat. Few activities can top boating on Lake Lanier, whether for recreational fishing, kayaking, high-speed cruising in a performance powerboat, or enjoying a relaxing evening sunset on the water. Lake Lanier boasts some of the best striper and spotted bass fishing in the state of Georgia, maybe even the entire nation! The Lake Lanier records for striped bass is 47lbs and spotted bass is 8lbs! For professional guidance to the best fishing spots, some of the local fishing charter services are Lake Lanier Striper Charters, Catching Not Fishing Guide Services, Capt. Mack’s Lake Lanier Fishing Charters, Striper Steve Fishing Charters and many others around the lake.
The south end of Lake Lanier, near Buford, is closer to Atlanta (about 30 minutes to the south) and is wider with more open water and boat ramps, making it very popular for boaters to access and enjoy the lake, parks and beaches.
