A popular Hatteras model introduced in 2002 as a tournament-ready fishing machine, the 54C was designed around a list of features (lots of storage, adequate crew quarters, workable engine room, for example) without diminishing the basic Hatteras layout. The 54 Convertible was a departure from earlier models with new features such as a sleeker profile—broken shearline is now smooth to aft and has more pronounced flare to bow. Large elliptical frameless, smoked-glass windows bathe the main deck interior with light and add sophistication. Notable changes below the waterline include design engineering of the running bottom which is convex from keel to chine for a smoother ride in head seas and to enhance stability. Two spray rails were added to each side to deflect spray. Typical of most convertibles, deadrise diminishes to aft in order to increase lift, improve low-speed handling, and increase transverse stability while on plane. Hatteras utilizes a “twisted bottom” variable degree deadrise from 20-degree at midship to a nearly flat 2-degree at transom. The 54C has a sharp entry to plow through waves and prop tunnels to reduce shaft angle and draft to just 4’2”—great for shallow waters off Florida’s west coast, the Keys, and Bahamian islands.

The engine room is able to accommodate a pair of 1550HP CAT C30 V-12 diesel engines (power option); standard is a pair of 800HP CAT 3406E diesels. Optional twin 1400HP 3412E CATs can cruise at over 30 knots and hit 35+ top speed. Twin 1000HP CAT C18 diesels are another power option. Engine room has huge air plenums with filters and more than sufficient space to do maintenance and access other engine room equipment.
The 149 sq ft cockpit features a 6.5’ long fishbox with macerator, bait and tackle center with sink and bait freezer, raw and freshwater washdowns, chill box under step to salon door and a pair of storage lockers under the port and starboard coamings. Transom fish door isn’t gated purposely to avoid accidental overboards while hauling in a large fish.
Large 150 sq ft flybridge features two Murray Brothers pedestal ladder-back seats positioned aft on the bridge deck for unobstructed views of the cockpit and the water to either side, along with the usual all-around views from a convertible bridge helm. Pod console has single-lever controls for backing down on a fish or docking. An optional retracting electronics module is available, as are a pair of electronic teaser reels mounted overhead in a flush-mount cabinet built into the hardtop above the captain’s seat. Drink box is forward and to port. Cushioned portside seating has storage underneath.
Well-appointed, comfortable accommodations are the hallmark of a convertible yacht, whether cruising with family or on extended fishing excursions. Salon, galley, and dinette are on the same level with 195 sq ft of entertaining and relaxing space. Large wide side windows allow lots of natural light to brighten the interior and panoramic views underway. Lots of storage for self-sufficiency at sea during tournaments or long passages, such as a run to the Bahamas. The salon features a beautiful faux leather couch with storage below for fishing rods or other gear. Optional coffee table also has built-in storage. Full galley is equipped with 4-drawer undercounter Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer unit, 4-burner stovetop, microwave/convection oven, garbage disposal, wide countertops, and storage cabinets.
Sleeping quarters consist of 3 staterooms and 2 heads. Forward guest stateroom has optional 2-bunk configuration; standard is queen centerline berth with storage beneath and cedar-lined locker. Master cabin is to port and features plenty of storage, including cedar-lined locker. The third guest/crew stateroom to starboard, has a double-door closet and side-by-side berths with built-in storage beneath. A standard washer and dryer combo is in a companionway closet.
The 54 Convertible is produced in the same legendary Hatteras construction standards of solid fiberglass hull bottom and non-absorbent Divinycell foam core in hull sides, decks, and superstructure for lightweight strength and sound insulation. Engine beds are mounted to steel plates that are fully encapsulated in fiberglass stringers which helps prevent engine vibrations from transferring to the hull for a more comfortable, quieter ride. The large 39x75 7-blade Nibral props and low gear ratio also help reduce vibration. A shallower shaft angle allows a more horizontal propeller thrust that enhances performance and efficiency. Besides prop tunnels, Hatteras uses a 5-step system to protect the bottom.
Building the topsides in three parts that are precisely fitted to the hull, ensures a strong rugged vessel, able to endure the rigors of pursuing trophy gamefish in rough conditions. Handling is silky-smooth with Teleflex hydraulics and a responsive helm in tight turns. The 54C tracks straight and true at a cruise speed of over 42 mph at 2100 rpm.
Some of the standard equipment includes a 17kW Onan genset, Glendinning Cablemaster; adjustable Murray Brothers captain and companion seats; Northstar GPS/Plotter; Icom VHF; Simrad autopilot, depth and speed indicators; insulated drink box on bridge; bait and tackle center; double-size bait freezer; steel mounting plate for optional cockpit fighting chair; port and starboard storage lockers, central vacuum system, U-Line icemaker in salon; Amtico flooring in galley, and more.
Many Hatteras 54 Convertibles have been upgraded and outfitted with additional fishing equipment (full Pipewelders tower, outriggers, livewell, Murray Brothers fighting chair), electronics and entertainment systems, custom interior furnishings, décor, and surface materials, and more. While the signature Hatteras high bow running profile, performance, seakeeping, and yacht-quality workmanship remain consistent, owner personalization may vary with each 54C produced.
The Hatteras 54 Convertible is 54’0” in length overall with a 17’3” beam and 4’2” draft. Fuel capacity is 1250 gallons; freshwater capacity is 192 gallons; holding tank is 91 gallons. Weight is 74,000 lbs.
