Pama Yachts has a fascinating backstory that blends craftsmanship, international ambition, and a touch of reinvention.
The company traces its roots to 1986, when Taiwanese boatbuilder Philip Wang founded Prima Yachts. This venture eventually gave rise to the Pama Yachts brand, which quickly gained recognition for its raised pilothouse and semi-displacement yachts. Initially based in Taiwan, the company outgrew its facilities and relocated to Shenzhen, China in 1992, where it established a 14,000-square-meter shipyard complete with a launch quay.
Pama Yachts became known for its stylish fiberglass yachts ranging from 15 to 27 meters, including popular models like the Pama 54’ Pilothouse (LX540) and Pama 62' Pilothouse (LX620). These vessels were celebrated for their spacious interiors, solid construction, and attention to detail—often incorporating input from international designers like Howard Apollonio.
The brand enjoyed success in markets across Asia, Europe, Australia, and the U.S., with boats built to meet rigorous standards such as ABYC, ABS, USCG, and CE RINA certifications. However, despite its strong reputation, Pama Yachts ceased operations in 2016.
Even today, used Pama yachts are sought after for their durability and design, with many still cruising the seas decades after their launch.
The Pama LX540 was designed by Howard Apollonio and David Adams—a duo known for blending performance with elegant, livable design. Apollonio, in particular, has a long-standing reputation in naval architecture, especially for raised pilothouse yachts like the LX540. Their collaboration brought together sleek exterior lines, thoughtful interior layouts, and solid engineering that made the LX540 stand out in its class.
Howard Apollonio is a renowned American naval architect and marine engineer with over 50 years of experience designing yachts, commercial vessels, and military craft. He’s especially celebrated for his work on raised pilothouse motor yachts, a style he helped popularize through collaborations with brands like Christensen, Pama, Westport, Cheoy Lee, Hampton/Regency, and Queenship.
Apollonio’s designs are known for blending classic aesthetics with modern performance, often featuring efficient hull forms, spacious interiors, and thoughtful systems integration. He’s also the creative force behind Apollonian Yachts, a brand he co-founded to fill a gap in the market for mid-sized, owner-operated pilothouse yachts. The flagship Apollonian 52 is a prime example—designed to be affordable, easy to handle, and packed with liveaboard comfort.
His influence spans continents and decades, and his yachts are still admired for their craftsmanship and seaworthiness.
David Adams was an accomplished Australian yachtsman and yacht designer with a remarkable career both on and off the water. He’s best known for his solo circumnavigation victories, particularly winning Class II of the 1994–95 BOC Challenge (now the VELUX 5 Oceans Race) aboard True Blue, a 50-foot yacht designed by Scott Jutson. That win set a new record for the fastest solo circumnavigation by an Australian in his class.
Beyond racing, Adams co-founded Tricon Marine in China in 2009, where he collaborated with naval architect Howard Apollonio to launch the Argos G92—a luxury motor yacht with a hybrid hull designed for both speed and efficiency. His work at Tricon reflected a shift from racing to high-end yacht production, blending performance with comfort.
Approximately fifteen Pama Yachts were sold in the United States and Canada and there is an active Owner’s Group that shares information about the yachts, maintenance tips and cruising plans.
