Fandango is a superbly maintained and upgraded example of this spacious blue water cruiser.
She is a semi-custom build by North Wind yachts in Barcelona, launched in 1989. For the past 6 years, her knowledeable and hands-on owner has enjoyed cruising and living aboard this beautiful yacht. As life brings changes, now it is time for Fandango to pass on to the next owner for them to make new voyages of discovery.
Fandango is rare combination: an elegant sailing yacht that is large enough to make a very comfortable live-aboard. Her accomodations are equal to or better than many city apartments, at a very small fraction of the price. Think of her as a 2 main bedroom, 2 double bunk room, 2 bath floating condo with lots of storage, and world class views.
Robust, overbuilt, sea-kindly with a nice turn of speed, Fandango is easy to sail short-handed, and can take you places! At 6 knots she has a cruising range of 750 miles under power. Hydraulic furling on main, genoa and staysail, oversized hydraulic two speed primaries, excellent sails, and a new, easy to use cruising spinnaker complete her sail plan. She awaits showings to interested blue-water sailors and live-aboards, and qualified co-brokers by appointment at her slip at Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City, NJ.
Sails and Rigging
Fandango is a cutter rig. Her yankee-cut jib and self-tacking staysail are both roller-furled. The mainsail is furled inside the mast via a hydraulically driven motor. The large jib is handled by hydraulically powered two speed winches. Sailhandling is very managable by a small crew or couple. All sails are in excellent condition, with UV cover replacements within the past 3 years. An asymmetrical cruising spinnaker was added in 2017, on a top-down continuous line furling system. This allows the spinnaker to be removed and stored while still on the furling rope.
Fandango's mast is a robust section aluminum spar stepped on the keel. Standing rigging is massive and was dye tested in 2015. The masthead rig has twin spreaders, and running backstays attaching at the staysail tang. The backstay is insulated to serve as an antenna for a SSB radio (available, but not connected).
Main propulsion is provided by a 6 cylinder 200 HP Volvo FWC diesel installed in 2004, currently on 1,151 hours. It drives a fixed 3 blade propellor via a straight shaft. The engine drives both 12 and 24 volt alternators. The Northern Lights 6kw genset provides ample power to run all systems on board. Both motors are served by parallel fuel filter/water separators which can be switched as needed. Fuel capacity is 2 x 200 gallons in stainless steel tanks. There is a substantial 24 V bowthruster for ease of maneuvering in close quarters.
Fandango is equiped with two 16k BTU marine air conditioners, serving the main cabin, master and guest cabins. Each is controlled by an independant digital thermostat. Heat is provided by a 50,000 BTU hydronic heater which distributes heat throughout the vessel's interior. The heater was installed in 2016 and is controlled by a single thermostat.
Hull and Deck
The hull is solid glass, with no core. She is heavily built! Of her 28 ton displacement, 11 tons are found in the lead of the fin keel. The hull is bolted to the deck along the toe rail. Her draft is 6'2". The semi-balanced rudder is mounted on a partial skeg.
The flush deck is a foam core sandwich (no balsa), averaging 2 inches thick. This goes a long way to keeping the interior comfortable. The entire deck was given a new application of kiwigrip - excellent non skid properties - in 2020. There are a total of 9 opening hatches and 9 opening ports to provide plenty of ventilation at anchor or dock. There is a passarelle.
The toerail is solid teak finished with Semco sealant - no oil or varnish - in excellent condition. The enormous cockpit has teak boards on the sole and wrap-around seating, with cockpit cushions. A central fixed table has wings which when raised make table seating for 6 with ease. Above the cockpit is a fiberglass hardtop with a full enclosure offering amazing 360 degree visability. The side and aft curtain roll up for ventilation and access. The forward facing sections are optically pure polycarbonate.
Aft of the cockpit is the athwarts-ship dinghy cradle. Although Fandango is equipped with robust davits, the option of storing the dinghy on deck allows easy access
to the swim platform. Lauching and retrieving the dinghy from the cradle is an easy effort, using the boom as a crane. Lifting the dingy with the outboard mounted is
easily done with a 2 speed winch at the mast. Alternatively, the dinghy can hang from the davits.
Moving further aft, you'll find the teak 'patio'. This wonderful area allows sitting out in deck chairs for sunsets, or al fresco dining. There are two large hatches which open to the enormous lazarette below, providing plenty of storage.
Off the transom is a large swim plaform, with a ladder to the deck as well as a swim ladder. The platform makes a great 'dock' to get in and out of the dinghy. Both ladders are removable, to allow the swim platform to fold up to the transom when sailing in big seas.
Simply put, Fandango is a boat for people who love a traditional teak interior.
With the exception of the head/shower stalls, the entire interior is finished with beautiful rich teak. To call the interior elegant is an understatement
The saloon is the heart of any boat, and the one on Fandango is truly a gem. The large windows provide a 270 degree view, and eliminate any hint of the cave-like feeling found blow decks on many other boats. Around the perimeter of the cabin are bookshelves, counter, lockers and drawers. The nav station makes for an excellent
'work-from-home' station. The teak throughout the cabin is accented with a lighter bamboo veneer on the table and countertops. The dinette table expands and has been known to seat 8 for dinner.
Across from the dinette, an audiophile's stereo and a large flat screen tv in a clever hide-away cabinet comprise the vessel's entertainment center. Fandango is VERY well equiped to entertain!
The large well-lit galley, just aft and down from the saloon, has a wrap around counter and two large under counter stainless steel refrigerator/freezers. Each has an independant Cold Machine installed in 2016. There is a double sink molded into the corian countertop. A 3 burner propane stove and oven have an exhaust fan in the hood above. There are 3 opening ports, and a great deal of storage found in cabinets and drawers. Across from the galley is a large double pantry which also contains an ice maker.
As with most center cockpit designs, the owner's cabin on Fandango is located aft. This cabin offers an amazing amount of space. The centerline queen bed has a memory foam mattress. There are 4 large hanging lockers as well as drawers and shelves. Cat shown for scale and is not included. The adjacent master bath with electric head has a large vanity and roomy shower stall.
The warmly appointed and comfortable comfortable guest cabin to port has a large pullman berth, hanging locker & drawers. There is a guest / day head directly opposite, with separate stall shower. Forward are two mirror image port and starboard private bunk rooms, each with adult sized over / under bunks. The owner uses the starboard bunk room to store the easy to deploy downwind reaching sail, which furls on its captive forestay and fits perfectly on one bunk.
A gem of a feature on a boat of this size and capability is the 'shop,' a converted third head. Fandango's forepeak features a versatile workbench, phenomenal storage and access to both the underside of the windlass - dry and corrosion free - and the bowthruster motor and tube via a heavy plexi window.
Fandango's GPS chart plotter is a 2017 Furuno 15" TZtouch system installed at the nav station. An android tablet is used in the cockpit as a remote display/control. The hydraulic autopilot is controlled by a 2021 Furuno FP300. Raytheon 24 mile color radar mounted at the helm. VHF radio is installed at the nav station, with hand held used in the cockpit.
The onboard entertainment system has a 40" hide-away LCD TV with a Blue Ray player. A custom audiophile sound system features B&W speakers. There are multiple input options, including bluetooth. The stereo drives the interior speakers and cockpit speakers.
Fandango is equiped with both 12 and 24 volt DC systems. The vast majority of the boat runs off the 12 volt system, powered by 4 x 100 amp hour sealed lead acid batteries. The 24 volt system drives the heavy loads of the bow thruster, anchor windlass, and hydraulic pump, and is powered by 6 AGM batteries. Each bank has a separate built-in shore power charger. 400 watts of solar cells were added in 2018 to the cockpit roof. These charge both battery banks via separate MPPT chargers.
Away from the dock, AC power is provided by the Northern Lights genset (7KW) with approximately 400 hours.. A 900 watt inverter provides enough AC power to run the entertainment system in silence.
Over the past 5 years, all of Fandango's lights - both interior and exterior - have been converted to high efficiency LEDs.
Tankage and Plumbing
All of Fandango's plumbing was replaced with a modern Pex system in 2017. There are two water tanks which each hold 200 gallons. There are separate manifolds with valves for both hot and cold water. The electric hot water tank holds 22 gallons. The holding tank is 100 gallons. There is a deck wash hose bib in the lazarette, and a retractable anchor washdown hose at the bow.
Both heads are electric macerator type, and can be fed by tank or ambient water.
Fandango has two anchors. The primary is an 80 lb Rocna mounted on a custom articulating bronze rollers, with 250 feet of chain. The secondary is a 75 lb. CQR with 150 feet of chain, on a single bronze roller. Anchor service is provided by 24 volt verticle windlass.
Fandango has an 11' rigid hull inflatable dinghy with a 9.9 hp Honda 4 stroke outboard motor. The boat will plane at high speed with 2 adults on board. The dinghy can be stored in either the aft deck cradle or the davits.
