1987 Nonsuch Ultra 30 ANNIE'S SONG


The Nonsuch 30 was the idea of Canadian yachtsman Gordon Fisher. He and yacht designer Mark Ellis approached George Hinterhoeller to build this unique cruising catboat. Introduced in 1978, it gained wide acceptance in Canada and was soon popularized in the United States. Production ceased in 1994, with more than 500 hulls produced.


Ellis modified the traditional catboat hull, giving it a finer entry and carrying the maximum beam farther aft. Underwater, the fin keel and partially balanced spade rudder largely eliminate the considerable weather helm common to most catboats. And while the plumb bow and stern, distinctive sheer and highly cambered coach roof also characterize the Nonsuch 30, its most prominent feature is the tall, tapered, unstayed mast with a wishbone boom.

Enter the side decks through the port or starboard boarding gates and onto the wide side decks. Safety is ensured with high stainless steel stanchions and life line along with Teak cabin top hand rails for stability and easy and complete walk around side decks. The cockpit is large with port and starboard seating, with closed foam cushions, and a folding wood table forward of the pedestal. All instrumentation and electronics are within easy reach.


Centered and forward through double louvered doors is the companionway to the main cabin. Down a few steps you enter the cabin. Behind the steps is access to the engine compartment. Immediately to port is the aft facing navigation station with a desk and electrical panels. Further forward to port is a long settee with extension under the navigation station for use as a berth. Outboard is storage and under the berth is more storage. Along the starboard side is an L-Shaped settee which converts to a double berth. Centered is a large table with leaf extensions. Aft of the settee are two large storage lockers and outboard is more storage. Forward and to port is the L-Shaped galley with excellent food prep and storage. The refrigeration is in the counter. Across from the galley to starboard is entry into the large head compartment. The head features a separate shower stall and a vanity with to storage.


All the way forward is the stateroom with a privacy door to the main cabin. Just past the door entry to starboard is direct private access into the head compartment. The Pullman berth is situated along the port side with storage drawers beneath. Across and to starboard is a mirrored vanity and storage lockers. Forward is access into the anchor locker and additional storage.


The interior sole is Teak and Holly and the fabrics are green Sunbrella. All the interior woodwork is in excellent condition.

The galley in located along the forward port section of the main cabin and offers excellent food storage and preparation space that will please the onboard chef.

The sail is handled from the safety of the large cockpit. Running rigging consists of a main halyard, a mainsheet, and a choker line, which controls the fullness or flatness of the sail by adjusting the fore-and-aft position of the wishbone boom. The mast tends to bend to leeward when the wind freshens, which spills the wind from the sail and keeps the boat from being overpowered. Along with the wide beam and a 39-percent ballast-to-displacement ratio, this makes for a stable and forgiving boat.
