Aurora is an excellent example of how a pilothouse cutter ketch can be designed for speed, comfort, and safety. Under sail, the cutter-ketch rig offers many configurations from staysail only, to jib and jigger, to a full press of sail including spinnaker. Under power, the efficient hull configuration allows a cruising speed of 7+ knots at a diesel consumption rate of 1.5 - 2.0 gph. At anchor, the Nauticat 40 provides many areas to hang out including a wide open space on the forward deck, a large poop deck aft, a nice safe cockpit tucked in behind the dodger, and best of all, a cozy pilothouse for those cold, rainy days; all with a giant picture window to the anchorage. Sparkman and Stephens Design.
Specifications
Aurora's aft cabin has a centerline queen bed, 5 opening ports, an overhead hatch, a settee to port, and copious storage in hanging lockers, shelves, and cubby holes. There is an en-suite head with separate shower.
The forward cabin has a v-berth arrangement with filler, an upper berth to port, a large overhead hatch, a hanging locker, and abundant storage under and over the berths.
Next aft is the galley with a cooking area to port and a single berth to starboard with privacy curtain and a weather cloth making it suitable for offshore sleeping.
Also on the starboard side between the forward cabin and the galley is a head with handheld shower, a dedicated holding tank, and storage cabinets above and below the sink.
Next aft and the center of on-board living, is the spacious pilothouse with a large dinette and settee to port and a complete inside steering station with electronics, bow thruster control, etc. on the starboard side. From this space there is a panoramic view of the surroundings rarely found in any pilothouse boat. There are many reading and work lights as well as red lighting for night sailing. All port-lights have curtains or screens for privacy. The SSB control head is located just aft of the settee for easy use.
