2018 Jim Smith 48 Walkaround Express

Launched in 2018, the custom 48 Walkaround Express, D&D, is powered by quadruple 450 hp Mercury outboards capable of a top speed of 48 knots and a cruising speed of 32 knots. Building custom high-speed sportfish boats is the legacy of Jim Smith, who utilized his knowledge of airplane construction, hydroplanes, and cold-molded construction in 1959 to pioneer the fast (45 knot, when 20-25 knot speeds were typical), lightweight, strong fishing boats that greatly influenced the sportfishing boats of today. Jim Smith boats are built using modern cold molded techniques utilizing okoume wood composite hulls with double biased glass, honeycomb core panes, and PVC composites from the hull up, to create lighter and stronger boats, able to endure and go the distance. The time proven deep-V hull and running bottom is designed to run comfortably in rough sea conditions.

The versatile walkaround design is ideal for different fishing styles—deep sea, kite fishing for sailfish or trolling for marlin, and D&D is jam-packed with fishing features and amenities expected of a much larger sportfish yacht. The cockpit features raised mezzanine seating with a large freezer underneath the port side seat and drink chiller underneath the starboard seat. Built in livewell capacity is a total of 275 gallons and there’s an abundance of flush mounted rod holders in the coamings all around, along with rocket launcher arrays on the Bausch gap tower, aft hardtop, and the centerline offset pedestal mounted Blue Water stand in cockpit. Outriggers and center rigger are mounted to tower legs to keep walkaround side decks clear. The 48 Walkaround’s versatility includes the Isinglass enclosed raised helm deck with port and starboard bench seats with armrests, just two steps up from the cockpit action in air-conditioned comfort. Circular steps lead belowdecks to a midships stateroom (under the helm deck) with walkaround queen berth and lots of rod storage. For entertainment, D&D features the JL Audio System, and a large flatscreen TV is mounted above the stateroom sliding door entrance, viewable from the forward V-settee. The full-equipped galley to starboard features a stone countertop and plenty storage cabinets and drawers. The full head with shower stall is on port side and a V-shaped dinette with pedestal table is forward. The fit and finish of the high-gloss teak joinery is elegant and traditional.
