BG CHARADE is a classic superyacht designed and built by Feadship, the renowned Dutch shipyard in 1990. Feadship DeVoogt provided naval architecture and Studio DeVoogt, the exterior design.  She was custom-built for Microsoft co-founder, Paul Allen for luxurious circumnavigation with a ground-breaking pilothouse that featured electronic steering—no helm wheel! The “larger than life” helm command center was refit with new modern upgraded electronics that include large touchscreens with the vessel management system and VHF radio to port, Furuno remote; AIS information in the digital chart, B&G equipment, another Furuno remote to starboard along with the depth sounder and sonar. The tiller lever is to port of the shift and throttle controls with manual shift and throttle in the engine room as back-up. Overhead are steering gear, compass light, gearbox, and engine analog gauges, wiper controls and another VHF radio. There are no helm chairs—just two benches; captain is alert and standing when on duty! The engineer’s office located next to the engine room also features the Yacht Management System and all controls. BG CHARADE recently underwent a Lloyd’s Class 10-year technical class survey—a major undertaking!

Notable among the 2015 major refit, was the addition of the main deck VIP ensuite stateroom, which replaced the formal dining room that was moved aft. Also on the main deck, the master head that originally was a Jack and Jill arrangement was redesigned to feature a bathtub in the center area with his and her sinks on either side, a massive shower with built-in bench to port, and a separate toilet to starboard; the master suite is full beam and a luxurious private haven for the owner.
