Moongate is a Ellis 30' Custom 30 listed for sale with United Yacht Broker Frank Tuma. Frank can be reached at 1-561-379-2590 to answer any questions you may have on this boat. United Yacht Sales is a professional brokerage firm that has experience listing and selling all types of Cruisers and similar boats. With over 165 yacht brokers worldwide, we have the largest network of boat buyers and sellers in the industry.
“Moongate” is a classic, custom designed, trailerable, outboard powered, cruiser with yacht quality construction, bronze/stainless steel hardware and teak joinerwork. At 30' overall and a draft of 2', she can explore cruising grounds at a top speed of over 30 knots. She provides ample accommodations and equipment for a couple or a small family. She is above all, practical and cost effective to transport, store, maintain and re-power as technology evolves. The use of an outboard bracket combined with a low deadrise allows the lower unit to be positioned substantially higher and further aft of the hull for reduced drag, higher speed, better fuel economy and shallow draft. This also eliminates seawater pumps and exhaust penetrations and leaves the bilge free for storage. For added safety, there are no through-hull fittings below the water line.
The forward cabin is finished with yacht quality hardware, ceiling liner, a teak and holly sole, varnished teak doors, bookshelves and trim and cypress paneling. There is a large V-Berth with 6” foam mattresses and a matching filler cushion, a separate head, a sink cabinet with medicine chest, extra drawers and a bureau to port for stowage. Underneath the V-Berth are two butterfly doors to a large stowage locker for bedding and canvas. The head contains a portable MSD plumbed to a macerator for overboard discharge. There is a screened Bomar hatch with solar powered exhaust and 4 opening ports for ventilation.
Constructed by Ellis Boat Company in Southwest Harbor Maine, she is hand-laid heavy mat fiberglass to commercial specifications. Hull thickness approaches 3/4" at the keel with a transom comprised of two layers of 3/4" marine ply sandwiched between mat and glass. There is a positive flotation, all aluminum, Gil outboard bracket through bolted to the transom. The original full keel was modified in the mold to provide a shallow draft skeg which serves as the bilge. All available space not used for tankage or bilge access has been injected with foam flotation.
Constructed of 3/4” balsa core with mat and glass. There is a solid teak bow pulpit with twin anchor rollers, an oversized anchor bit and a 1" stainless steel safety rail. Through deck anchor hawses access both chain and nylon rode attached to both Plow and Bruce anchors. The hull/deck joint is finished with a custom, heavy duty 2” PVC rub rail attached with SS screws. A heavy wall 1 1/2" SS gantry constructed by Railmakers supports the radar, 2 solar panels, antennas, fish rod holders, telescoping fishing outriggers, halogen cockpit lights and 2 structurally significant hinged arms designed with block and tackle to deploy roll control stabilizers when at anchor or side tied.
The teak finished bridge provides excellent visibility and ventilation through two opening windshields, four side windows, and comfortable seating for two. On the centerline, is a standing height teak chart table with lockable storage for navigation instruments on removable mounts. Below the chart table is a slide out ice chest for day use. A large stowage compartment for tools and equipment completes the center console.
The helm, to starboard, features a sliding helm seat for either seated or standing control positions. A Seastar self-bleeding hydraulic steering system is coupled with a nearly horizontal SS wheel with an Edson spinning knob. The dash contains Yamaha factory controls, switches for nav lights and wipers, a Flowscan and searchlight control. Below are teak-trimmed cabinets containing the smart battery switch, the electrical panel, fuel line valves and stowage. The bridge can be configured to be completely open or totally enclosed with canvas and side curtains extending to the transom.
The cockpit provides a varnished teak drop leaf table and U-Shaped settee that can be converted to an additional berth. Two removable cabinets amidships, port and starboard, contain storage for two ice chests, a deep sink with shower attachment, a two burner SS stove, two large drawers for utensils and two cabinets for food and cookware stowage. The helm seats can both slide forward for additional counter space. A 5' removable hatch allows centerline access to the bilge which extends from the cabin bulkhead to the transom. Forward are the 20 gallon poly water tank, 5 gallon water heater, automatic bilge pump and battery compartments. Aft is open stowage containing an 8' inflatable with OB motor, barbeque grill, roll control stabilizers, two 30' shore power cords and additional equipment. PVC wiring and plumbing tunnels are foamed in place for future changes. Outboard, port and starboard are access hatches for two 35 gallon aluminum fuel tanks, bonded and grounded.
“Moongate” is currently powered with a 1997 250 hp Yamaha outboard with SS prop mounted on a Gil bracket. This configuration provides shallow draft, enhanced performance and allows all running gear to be tilted completely out of the water, eliminating the potential for electrolysis. She can achieve top speeds of 35 mph and cruises economically at 24 mph and 4000 rpm. At trolling speeds below 2000 rpm, she runs on 4 cylinders instead of 6 consuming approximately 3-4 gallons/hour. This engine is her second re-power, has less than 250 engine hours and has been professionally maintained.
The main electrical panel under the helm provides hydraulic breakers and in line ammeters for both ac and dc systems. The current draw of any individual 12v or 115v circuit can be isolated and measured in real time. The ac panel has a master shutoff and polarity indicator from the through deck 30 amp shore power receptacle. Two 30' shore power cords can be connected to provide dock side service. The on board ac service is comprised of a 30 amp Professional Mariner charger/converter, a 5 gallon hot water heater and numerous GFI outlets in the cockpit and below decks to supply tools, a hairdryer, a cabin heater and personal electronics chargers.
The 12V system is fed by a “smart” battery switch which provides an LED readout of current battery voltages and can switch between battery 1 source, Battery 2 source, both sourced and master off. The charger/converter is connected to this switch such that both batteries are recharged regardless of the position of the switch. Two 5 watt solar panels on the radar arch provide battery voltage maintenance while at the dock or in storage. 12V breakers are provided for all typical on board functions and equipment including numerous 12V accessory sockets above and below decks.
A 20 gallon water tank feeds two SS sinks, one in the cabin and an extra-deep “sea” sink in the cockpit. Both have pressure hot and cold water delivery along with non-powered Whale foot pumps. The cockpit sink has a fixture for attaching a telephone-type shower head which can use either hot or cold, powered or non-powered fresh water delivery. Located under the starboard gunwhale is a coiled freshwater wash down hose for use in the cockpit or rinsing off equipment.
Electronics include VHF radio, Garmin GPS chart plotter with northeast US map chip, radar, depth sounder, Sony CD player/stereo, and XM radio. Other equipment includes full canvas, all USCGA fire and safety equipment, barbeque grill, 8' inflatable with nav lights and outboard, stabilizers, fenders, swim ladder, lines, custom V-Berth linens, tools, spares, cleaning equipment, etc.
The trailer is a 2003 Continental, aluminum, tandem-axle bunk trailer with 4-wheel hydraulic surge brakes. Total trailer weight is 950 lbs. with a capacity of 8,500 lbs.
