The Cheoy Lee Company has been a major shipbuilder for over a century, beginning around 1870 as a building and repair yard for steam-powered craft. Cheoy Lee has always been owned by the same family, and has been in business for four generations now. Cheoy Lee began its journey in the boat building business in Shanghai, moving to Hong Kong in 1936. The headquarters of Cheoy Lee remains in Hong Kong today, with a production facility up-river from Macau on the mainland. The production facility is 500,000 square feet and employs approximately 800 workers skilled in steel, alloy, and fiberglass.
In 1955, the company built wooden sailing yachts, and starting in the early 1970s began to produce fiberglass boats. Today Cheoy Lee is the largest yacht builder in Asia, with an impressive product line including world-class sailing yachts, transoceanic trawlers, commercial vessels and custom mega yachts.
Throughout the 20th century, Cheoy Lee advanced in GRP technology. Presently, the company is a state of the art production facility focused on continually advancing in technology.
